Sligo County Council Delegation Visit New York

A delegation from Sligo County Council, led by Cathaoirleach Councillor Dónal Gilroy, undertook a series of St. Patrick’s Day engagements in New York this month.

The visit followed an invitation from the County Sligo Social and Benevolent Association of New York.  Cllr Gilroy was accompanied by Leas-Cathaoirleach Councillor Fergal Nealon, Deputy Chief Executive Emer Concannon, and Director of Services Marie Whelan.

Alongside a formal meeting with the County Sligo Social and Benevolent Association of New York, the delegation participated in an extensive programme of engagements, including discussions with the IDA, Tourism Ireland, and Enterprise Ireland. These meetings focused on promoting Sligo as a leading destination for investment, tourism, and relocation, and on strengthening existing relationships with key economic and tourism partners.

Reflecting on the visit, Cathaoirleach Cllr Dónal Gilroy said:

“The annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations offer an invaluable platform to highlight all that Sligo has to offer to an American audience. For the Sligo Association in New York, this annual visit represents an important civic connection with their home county. Our meetings with the IDA, Tourism Ireland, and Enterprise Ireland centred on advancing Sligo’s ongoing campaign to position the county as a premium destination for investors, visitors, and those considering a move to the Northwest.”

A key highlight of the visit was participation in the iconic St. Patrick’s Day Parade on 5th Avenue, an honour for all members of the delegation and a memorable opportunity to engage with the Irish diaspora.
