The National Day of Commemoration Ceremony took place on Sunday, 12 July 2026, at Sligo City Hall, honouring the memory of Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in past wars or while serving in United Nations peacekeeping missions.

The annual ceremony, held on the Sunday closest to 11 July — the anniversary of the 1921 Truce which ended the Irish War of Independence — was attended by members of the public, local dignitaries, veterans, members of the Defence Forces and representatives of various faith communities.

The ecumenical service was led by Rev. Alan Mitchell, Fr. Pat Lombard, Ven. Patrick Bamber, Dean Ruth West and Rev. Dr. Kevin Tully, who joined together in prayer and remembrance to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country and in the cause of peace.

Music for the ceremony was provided by the Sligo Concert Band and Sligo Rose, Bethany McLoughlin, whose performances added a fitting and reflective atmosphere to the occasion.

The Defence Forces, represented by Commandant Barry Dolan on behalf of the Officer Commanding, 28th Infantry Battalion, played a central role in the ceremony. Lieutenant Luke Bonner served as Flag Officer. The Guard of Honour was under the command of Sergeant Keith Malone, with Corporal Andrew Duffy serving as Second-in-Command. Sergeant Tony Clarke fulfilled the role of Military Police Wreath Bearer.

A wreath was laid by Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr Dara Mulvey, on behalf of the people of County Sligo. This was followed by a period of silent reflection and the raising of the National Flag, providing a poignant moment of remembrance and national unity.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cathaoirleach Cllr Dara Mulvey said:

“The National Day of Commemoration provides an important opportunity for us to come together as a community to remember and honour all those who lost their lives in past wars and conflicts, and those who died while serving in United Nations peacekeeping missions. Today, we pay tribute to their courage, sacrifice and service, and we reaffirm our commitment to the values of peace, reconciliation and mutual respect that continue to guide us as a nation.”
