Sligo Communities Embrace Composting with Leaf Mould Project

Six community groups across Sligo are taking a proactive step toward sustainability by participating in a Leaf Mould Composting Project this Autumn. Supported by Sligo County Council’s Environment and Biodiversity teams.

Guided by composting specialist Craig Benton of Benton Ecological Solutions & Technology, the initiative introduces an eco-friendly way to transform fallen leaves into nutrient-rich mulch and valuable compost.

The project began with an online session to introduce the participating groups to leaf mould composting. This was followed by in-person visits where each group built and installed a number of large composting cages with lids and signage.

Leaf mould composting offers a low-maintenance solution for recycling autumn leaves. Unlike traditional composting, it doesn’t require turning or mixing with food waste. Within a year, it produces nutrient-rich mulch, and in two years, a fine, weed-free compost — ideal for enriching soil and boosting biodiversity.

The initiative is community-led, with Sligo County Council providing initial materials and expert guidance. Since then, local volunteers have taken ownership — collecting wet leaves, maintaining and monitoring the composting cages, and, in time, harvesting the compost to help enhance green spaces within their communities.

Áine O’Loughlen, Environmental Awareness Officer, described the initiative as

“a practical and empowering example of community-driven environmental action, showcasing the circular economy by turning green waste into a valuable local resource that enriches soil and supports biodiversity”.
