Welcoming guests to the event, Leas Cathaoirleach Cllr Fergal Nealon said:
“As Leas Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, it is my great privilege to welcome you all to County Hall for this very special Civic Reception. Today, we gather to celebrate three exceptional athletes—Gearóid McDaid, Cian McMunn, and Paddy Reape—whose achievements have brought immense pride to Sligo and to Ireland.”
Gearóid McDaid made history by becoming the first Irish surfer ever to win gold in the Men’s Shortboard at the European Surfing Championships in Santa Cruz, Portugal. His flawless performance against Europe’s top surfers secured the European Open Men’s title and marked a defining moment for Irish surfing. Gearóid’s success, combined with Ireland’s first-ever team podium finish, is expected to inspire a new generation of surfers and elevate Strandhill’s reputation as the heart of Irish surfing.
Cian McMunn claimed Individual Gold at the FEI European Jumping Championships for Ponies in Le Mans, France. Riding Esperando SK, Cian delivered a perfect jump-off round under immense pressure, showcasing skill and composure beyond his years. His achievement was complemented by Ireland’s team silver medal, where he played a pivotal role.
Paddy Reape played a crucial role in Ireland’s historic U18 European Gold Medal win at the FEI Championships in Riesenbeck, Germany. Riding Mr Rocky Blue, Paddy was first into the arena in the final round—a position of immense responsibility—and his strong performance helped secure Ireland’s landmark victory ahead of the Netherlands and Belgium.
Cllr Nealon concluded by emphasising the broader impact of their accomplishments:
"These three athletes have done more than win medals—they have become ambassadors for Sligo and for Ireland. Their achievements showcase the talent, resilience, and ambition that define our people. They remind us that sport is not just about competition; it is about community, identity, and inspiration."
He added,
"For Sligo, these victories strengthen our reputation as a county that nurtures excellence—whether on the waves, in the saddle, or in the show jumping arena. For Ireland, they demonstrate that we can stand proudly among Europe’s elite in diverse sporting disciplines."
The Leas Cathaoirleach also acknowledged the crucial support networks:
"I want to acknowledge the families, coaches, and clubs who have supported Gearóid, Cian, and Paddy on their journeys. Success at this level is never achieved alone—it is built on a foundation of encouragement, sacrifice, and belief."
On behalf of Sligo County Council, Cllr Nealon extended heartfelt congratulations:
"We are immensely proud of your accomplishments, and we look forward to following your journeys as you continue to achieve greatness in your respective sports."
