Sligo County Council Environment Section is delighted to partner with MyWaste.ie to offer the Green Business Hub Initiative in Sligo Town and surrounds in 2025.

This new initiative aims to help businesses manage their waste more effectively. As part of this initiative, MyWaste.ie is providing free signage to assist in the separation of waste into General Waste, Recycling, and Food Waste. Additionally, Sligo County Council will offer onsite advisory assistance to businesses, providing guidance and recommendations to optimise waste management practices. Participating businesses will receive information on free sustainable training available to Sligo businesses.

A report released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealed that 70% of the materials found in a typical commercial waste bin could be redirected for recycling. This indicates a significant loss of recyclable resources and a potentially avoidable financial burden for businesses, as effective waste segregation could reduce their disposal expenses.

Sligo Green Business Hub offers businesses the opportunity to potentially lower their waste disposal expenses by promoting waste minimisation and recycling, while also acknowledging their efforts. Participating businesses will receive a window sticker to display their commitment to sustainable practices. Furthermore, these businesses will be acknowledged on this website and through various social media channels.

Councillor Declan Bree, Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council stated,

“I am delighted that Sligo Town has been selected as a Green Business Hub. The Green Business Hub Initiative is a fantastic opportunity for Sligo businesses to lead the way in terms of waste management. We are proud to support this initiative and look forward to seeing its positive impact on our community”.

Áine O’Loughlen, Environmental Awareness Officer, Sligo County Council commented,

"We are thrilled to launch the Green Business Hub Initiative in Sligo. This initiative not only helps businesses manage their waste more efficiently but also plays an important role in our collective efforts to take climate action. We encourage all local businesses to participate and take advantage of the support and resources available."
