Following the launch of ‘Embracing Irelands Outdoors’, the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy 2023-2027, Sligo will, for the first time, embark on a journey which will result in the development of a 5-year County Outdoor Recreation Plan.
County Sligo Launches Outdoor Recreation Consultation for 5-Year Plan
The work is currently being led by a Project Team which includes representatives from Sligo County Council, Sligo Leader Partnership, Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership, Coillte, Failte Ireland and a National Governing Body of sport.
County Sligo is seeking the input of its recreational users and those with a vested interest in Sligo’s outdoor recreation landscape, to help develop a comprehensive 5-year plan for outdoor recreation. This consultation aims to enhance the County’s recreational offerings while ensuring the long-term sustainability of its unique natural environment.
“This consultation is vital in ensuring that the 5-year plan accurately reflects the needs and desires of a diverse range of stakeholders that like to engage in a variety of outdoor activities, for example surfing, fishing, hiking, kayaking, swimming and cycling, and for those who simply enjoy a walk in nature. We need to hear from as many voices as possible to ensure the plan’s success. Your input will help shape the future priorities for outdoor recreation in Sligo” said Emer Concannon, Director of Service for Sligo County Council and Chairperson of the Sligo Project Team said Emer Concannon, Director of Service for Sligo County Council and Chairperson of the Sligo Project Team.
Sligo's outdoor recreation offerings are as varied as the landscapes and waterscapes that define the County. From the rugged hills of the Dartry Mountains to the sweeping beaches of the Wild Atlantic Way, the County provides a vast range of possibilities for people of all ages and abilities. As part of the consultation process, there is a desire to not only improve the quality of existing amenities, but to also explore new opportunities that will encourage greater participation in outdoor activities while promoting positive physical and mental health benefits.
The consultation also seeks to address the growing need for conservation and environmental sustainability. The plan will play a pivotal role in safeguarding Sligo’s natural environment, protecting its biodiversity, and preserving eco-habitats to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the outdoor landscape.
“We are committed to striking a balance between developing recreational opportunities and protecting the natural beauty of the County,” said John Feerick, CEO of Sligo Leader Partnership Company. “Engaging with the community is essential to achieve this goal, and we look forward to the feedback we will receive.”
“County Sligo’s outdoor recreational spaces have the potential to become a key feature in the lives of its residents and visitors alike. This consultation is a critical step in ensuring that the County’s outdoor offerings remain vibrant, sustainable, and accessible for all” said Deirdre Lavin, CEO of Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership.
