Sligo County Council is delighted to announce that Approval in Principle has been granted by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht for the refurbishment and extension of the former Courthouse in Ballymote to house a new public library, (subject to necessary planning approval and statutory consents).
Refurbishment and Extension of former Courthouse in Ballymote

This marks a major step forward in delivering enhanced cultural and educational infrastructure for Ballymote and the surrounding area.
The project will breathe new life into a historic building, preserving its heritage while transforming it into a vibrant, multi-functional space. The new library will offer modern facilities including reading and IT access areas, creative and maker spaces, and shared amenities, all designed to meet the evolving needs of the community.
Separately, the former courthouse building is benefitting from Heritage Council funding under the Historic Towns Initiative 2025, supporting conservation works such as the reinstatement of natural slate roofing and timber windows—ensuring the building’s character is respectfully maintained.
Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr Dónal Gilroy, welcomed the announcement:
“This is a fantastic development for Ballymote and the wider South Sligo area. Libraries are more than just buildings—they are community hubs, places of learning, creativity, and connection. I’m proud that Sligo County Council is investing in a project that will serve generations to come while honouring the heritage of this landmark building.”
This project to transform Ballymote Courthouse is a major boost to the wider implementation of the Town Centre First Policy in Ballymote. The policy sets out a coordinated, strategic approach to town centre regeneration. It recognises that towns thrive when national and local efforts are aligned, and when Government Departments, State Agencies, Local Authorities, and communities work together to deliver better outcomes.
The Council will now proceed with detailed planning and costings, ensuring transparency and value for money, while continuing to engage with the community throughout the process.
