Cathaoirleach’s Reception Honours 40 Years of Sligo Samaritans Service

Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr Dónal Gilroy, hosted a special reception at County Hall on Tuesday, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Sligo branch of the Samaritans.

The event paid tribute to four decades of compassionate service and volunteerism by the Sligo Samaritans, who have provided support to countless individuals in emotional distress since the branch’s founding in 1985.

Speaking at the reception, Cathaoirleach Cllr Dónal Gilroy paid tribute to the volunteers and founders of the organisation, stating:

“It is my great honour and privilege, as Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, to welcome you all here this afternoon to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone—the 40th anniversary of the Sligo branch of the Samaritans.

Today, we gather not only to mark four decades of service, but to pay tribute to the extraordinary people who have given their time, their compassion, and their hearts to support those in need.”

The reception welcomed distinguished guests including Julie Bentley, CEO of Samaritans UK; Sarah O’Toole, CEO of Samaritans Ireland; Jonathan Neville, Regional Director of Samaritans Ireland; and Christina Farrington, Director of Sligo Samaritans. Also in attendance were many dedicated volunteers, past and present, whose contributions have shaped the organisation’s legacy.

A special mention was made of Founder Director Robbie Jackson and his wife Margaret, who were unfortunately unable to attend the reception. Their vision and commitment in establishing the Sligo branch in 1985 laid the foundation for what has become a cornerstone of support in the community.

Founder Volunteers Anne and Seamus Cummins were warmly welcomed and recognised for their continued involvement over the past 40 years. Their enduring dedication embodies the spirit of the Samaritans.

From its humble beginnings on Chapel Street to its current home on The Mall, the Sligo Samaritans have been a beacon of hope for countless individuals. The Cathaoirleach acknowledged the profound impact of their work:

“You have listened without judgment, offered comfort in moments of despair, and helped people find strength when they felt they had none.

As a community, we owe you our deepest gratitude. You have made Sligo a more compassionate place. You have saved lives. And you have shown us the power of kindness and connection.”
