The National Day of Commemoration Ceremony took place on Sunday afternoon at Sligo City Hall, honouring the memory of Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in past wars or while serving in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
National Day of Commemoration Ceremony
The solemn annual event, held on the Sunday closest to 11th July—the anniversary of the 1921 truce that ended the Irish War of Independence—was attended by members of the public, local dignitaries, and representatives of various faith communities.
The programme featured an ecumenical service led by Rev. Alan Mitchell, Fr. Pat Lombard, Ven. Patrick Bamber, Rev. Daniel Caldwell, and Emilie Mpoy. Prayers were offered by representatives from Sligo’s diverse religious communities, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the occasion.
The Defence Forces, under the command of Sgt. Cassidy, took part in the proceedings, lending military dignity and honour to the occasion. The ceremony also featured a moving performance by the Sligo Orpheus Choir and soloist Trevor Horan, which added a poignant musical tribute to the commemorations.
A wreath was laid by Cathaoirleach Cllr Dónal Gilroy, followed by a minute’s silence and the raising of the National Flag, marking a poignant moment of national reflection and unity.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Dónal Gilroy said:
“Today, we honour the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in the service of peace and freedom. This ceremony is a powerful reminder of our shared history and the values that bind us together as a nation. It is our duty to remember, and to ensure that future generations understand the cost of the peace we enjoy today.”
