Western Development Commission (WDC) Announces the Launch of Moving West Series 3 with County Sligo in the Spotlight

The Western Development Commission (WDC) is excited to announce the return of Moving West, now in its third season. The upcoming episode of the series will feature County Sligo and is set to air on 12th November at 7:30 pm on TG4

Produced by Dundara Television & Media in collaboration with the WDC and Sligo County Council, and hosted by beloved Irish television presenter Mary Kennedy, Moving West continues to explore the vibrant lifestyle and spectacular landscapes of the West and Northwest of Ireland. The series shares the inspiring stories of individuals and families who have relocated to these regions, embracing a new way of life.

In the Sligo episode, viewers will meet Gordon Fortier and his partner Ivana Hanjs, who moved from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, and Croatia respectively, to Sligo Town. Gordon took up an exciting job opportunity at Electrical & Automation Systems, a company based in Collooney. For them, one of the best aspects of living in Sligo is its proximity to nature, with regular walks in the shadow of Benbulben, hikes up Knocknarea, and days spent at Streedagh and Strandhill beaches

Another remarkable story is that of Karen Kearney, who moved to Sligo with her son Tristan. Karen started her own business, SOAK Bath Salts, and found that the move also benefited Tristan, who has additional needs. Tristan was able to access surf therapy, which has significantly helped him manage stress and anxiety. Karen stresses that moving to the West has greatly improved both her wellbeing and quality of life.

The episode also follows Brendan Doddy, originally from Sligo, who returned home after spending time working abroad. Brendan moved to the Netherlands after completing college and later worked at Intel in Leixlip, Co. Kildare. Eventually, Brendan made his way back to Sligo, where he found a fulfilling career at Abbott Diagnostics. His story highlights the appeal of returning to the Northwest, where he now enjoys both professional success and the unique lifestyle Sligo offers.

Well-known TG4 sports broadcaster Micheál Ó Domhnaill also shares his relocation experience. Originally from Waterford, Micheal moved to Sligo with his family over 20 years ago. Inspired by the natural beauty of the region and recognising a gap in the market, he launched a corporate video production business. Over time, the business has grown to produce broadcast material regularly featured on RTÉ and TG4.

Finally, viewers will meet Gearoid Conway and Elizabeth Farrell, who moved from Dublin to Sligo in the summer of 2020. Elizabeth, with fond memories of childhood trips to Strandhill Beach, mentioned the idea of relocating, and soon after, they were living in a cottage near Drumcliffe. Gearoid now works remotely for an Australian company, and bases himself at The Building Block, one of many co-working hubs in the region that provide flexible office solutions for remote workers.

Commenting on Sligo County Council’s sponsorship of an episode of this series, Chief Executive Martin Lydon said that it was important for the Council to support a programme which showcases the county’s unique qualities.

“Ongoing investment in infrastructure, housing and recreational facilities are earmarking Sligo as an ideal place to live and visit. The presence of multinational companies along with numerous remote working hubs make Sligo a viable option for professionals who want to experience a slower pace of life. Our presence on the Wild Atlantic Way and our abundance of outdoor amenities in an unspoilt landscape make for an attractive work/life balance.”

Mr Lydon also noted the county’s affordability, transport connectivity to larger cities and cultural offerings as reasons why people and businesses choose to make Sligo their home.

Allan Mulrooney, CEO of WDC, commented:
"Sligo is a vibrant part of the Northwest and West of Ireland, offering not only incredible natural beauty but also a thriving business and community atmosphere. Season Three of Moving West provides a platform to share the inspiring stories of those who have chosen Sligo as their home, and we are proud to support the continued growth and development of this region."

Mary Kennedy, presenter of Moving West, added:
"It’s always a pleasure to return to Sligo and hear the amazing stories of people who have made this stunning part of Ireland their home. Sligo's beautiful landscapes, sense of community, and welcoming atmosphere make it a truly unique place, and I’m delighted to share these stories with our audience."
