Sligo County Council is pleased to announce that the construction contract for the new link road connecting Mail Coach Road to Burton Street has been awarded to Harrington Concrete and Quarries, based in Kilkelly, Co. Mayo.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks, with substantial completion expected by early summer 2026.

Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr Dónal Gilroy, commented:

‘We wish to thank the Department of Transport for the funding made available for the construction contract, and we are delighted that construction will be commencing this summer. The project, when completed, will bring significant benefits to the town. Sydney Gallagher Parade, which is currently a cul de sac, will be extended onto Burton Street - this will significantly reduce motorised traffic congestion, and its associated air and noise pollution, at nearby locations in the south half of the city”.

The project includes a comprehensive upgrade of the surrounding road network and pedestrian infrastructure:

  • New road surfaces and footpaths at Sydney Gallagher Parade, Burton Street, Pearse Road, Mail Coach Road, and their junctions.
  • Installation of new traffic light systems at Pearse Road and Mail Coach Road junctions.
  • New pedestrian crossings at Pearse Road (adjacent to Mercy Primary School) and Sydney Gallagher Parade.
  • Dedicated cycle lanes on Sydney Gallagher Parade and Pearse Road.

These enhancements will create a safer, more efficient, and more welcoming environment for Active Travel users, including cyclists and pedestrians. The project will also integrate with future Active Travel schemes planned for Pearse Road and Temple Street, contributing to a more connected and sustainable urban transport network.

In addition to its functional benefits, the new infrastructure will visually enhance the public realm, improving the overall appearance and accessibility of this key area of Sligo town.
