Sligo City Hall was filled with pride and jubilation on Thursday, 28 November, as the Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Councillor Declan Bree, hosted a Civic Reception in honour of the Sligo Ladies Under 18 Football Team.
Civic Reception for All-Ireland winning Sligo Ladies U-18 Football Team
The Reception celebrated the team's remarkable victory in the All-Ireland B final against Tyrone at Brewster Park, Enniskillen in July.
Speaking at the Civic Reception, Cathaoirleach Councillor Declan Bree expressed profound pride in the team's achievement, commending their exceptional dedication, hard work, and talent. "Your victory not only brings glory to our county but also inspires us all with your resilience and skill,"
"This victory holds a special significance, especially considering the journey that led to this moment. Sligo's runners-up finish in the same final in 2023 against a formidable Kerry team speaks volumes about the perseverance and determination of these players."
“It is important to recognise that success like this is not achieved overnight. It is the result of years of hard work, dedication, and the support of the community.”
“I must applaud the exemplary leadership of our team captain, Ciara Walsh, whose dedication and passion have undoubtedly inspired her teammates to reach new heights. And let us not forget the invaluable guidance and expertise of Team Manager, Keith Mc Loughlin along with his team, Kieran Kilkenny, Gerry Quinn and Brian King, whose strategic vision and support have played a pivotal role in this victory.”
“Sligo has a rich history in ladies football, with efforts to establish a ladies structure in the county dating back to 1993. Since then, Sligo Ladies County Board has been working tirelessly to promote and develop the sport, organising competitions and fostering talent at various age levels. The growth and success of ladies football in Sligo is a testament to the dedication of players, coaches, and supporters who have contributed to its development.”
Cathaoirleach Councillor Declan Bree concluded by offering his heartfelt congratulations to the team. “To the Sligo Ladies Under 18 team, I offer my heartfelt congratulations on this well-deserved triumph. Your victory is a source of pride for all of us in Sligo, and it serves as a reminder of what can be achieved through hard work, perseverance, and unity. May this success be the beginning of many more victories to come, and may you continue to inspire generations of young athletes in our community.”
Team Captain Ciara Walsh expressed her gratitude to Sligo County Council for the Civic Reception, which recognised the team's success.
Manager Keith McLoughlin, in his address, conveyed his sincere thanks to Sligo County Council for hosting the Civic Reception. "It is a privilege to be part of a community that shows such incredible pride and enthusiasm for its sportspeople," he said. "This Civic Reception is a testament to the unity and spirit of Sligo, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share this moment with our friends, family, and supporters."
Mr McLoughlin acknowledged the dedication and hard work of the players over the past nine months, highlighting their commitment and passion. He expressed deep gratitude to the parents for their unwavering support, stating, "This victory is as much yours as it is ours." Mr McLoughlin also thanked the team's main sponsor, Lannons All Care Pharmacy, for their crucial financial support, and acknowledged the media coverage provided by the Sligo Weekender, Ocean FM, and Sligo Champion. He concluded by emphasising that their success was a collective community effort.
