The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Gerard Mullaney hosted a Civic Reception in County Hall for Noel Coen, Special Olympics World Games Medallist.
Noel Coen honoured with a Civic Reception
Noel’s achievements in winning both a silver and gold medal and also his representation of his country at the Special Olympic World Games earlier this year in Berlin, are worthy accomplishments to pay tribute to a truly remarkable young man.
Noel was joined at the civic reception by his family, friends, trainers from his local Equestrian Club Nightriders, Special Olympics Connacht members, and staff from Rehabcare, Sligo.
In addition to the Cathaoirleach, the audience was addressed by Myra Merrick, Regional Director of Special Olympics Connacht.
Sporting Heroes
In his welcome address the Cathaoirleach said ‘Sligo people have a special regard for their sporting heroes, we follow their careers with interest and celebrate their successes with great pride. This is true for the individual and team sports, and our special guest this afternoon has excelled in his chosen discipline on many occasions.
Special Olympics
Special Olympics Ireland works to transform lives through sport, by working with people with intellectual disabilities. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Ireland hosting the Special Olympics and since that time, the Special Olympics movement has gone from strength to strength.
Preparation
Nightriders Equestrian Club is where dreams become a reality, and this is certainly true for Noel. I would like to acknowledge Noel’s club, Nightriders Equestrian Club, who completed amazing work and impeccable training in preparation for the Special Olympics World Games, to the highest standard.
To compete in the Special Olympics World Games is a major achievement in any person’s career, but to bring home both a silver and gold medal can only be described as amazing.
Appreciation
This afternoon, Sligo County Council extends its congratulations to Noel, and on behalf of the Sligo community conveys its appreciation to you. This is in recognition for your sporting achievements, and the character and resolve you have shown on each step of this special journey.
Cathaoirleach Councillor Gerard Mullaney concluded by quoting Noel’s motto for athletes:
“Stay Calm, enjoy the experience, remember you are important.”
