From January 2024, new EU legislation means every household will be entitled to avail of a brown bin collection service.
Everyone everywhere is entitled to a Brown Bin Collection Service in 2024
There is positive news for households in rural areas. New legislation, which came into effect on 1st January 2024, means all householders in Ireland with access to a waste collection service, are entitled to a brown bin recycling collection service for food waste and light garden waste, from their waste collector.
It may be some time before your waste collector extends the service to your home. Until then, you can contact your current waste collector and let them know you want a brown bin collection service.
The brown bin service accepts all types of food including raw and cooked meat and fish, plate scrapings, along with fruit and vegetable peelings. Other items that can go into the brown bin include food-soiled paper napkins, paper towels, pizza boxes as well as grass clippings and light garden waste.

"Every single person can make a huge difference in helping our environment and contributing positively to Ireland achieving a recycling rate of 60% by 2030” said Pauline McDonogh, Spokesperson for MyWaste.ie.
