‘Dixie Dean’ Book Launched in Showgrounds

‘Dixie Dean’ Book Launched in Showgrounds Cathaoirleach Councillor Paul Taylor and Councillor Rosaleen O'Grady with Author Paul Little at the launch of book on Dixie Dean’s time with Sligo Rovers

The Cathaoirleach Councillor Paul Taylor was a guest at the Showgrounds on Saturday last for the launch of Paul Little’s book ‘In the shadow of Benbulben - Dixie Dean at Sligo Rovers’.

The acclaimed book details the Sligo Rovers career of the club’s most famous signing.  Attendance at the launch included Councillor Rosaleen O’Grady, Chairman of Sligo Rovers Tommy Higgins and members of the management committee, and former players Tony Fagan and Chris Rutherford.

The Cathaoirleach said

‘Whether you talk about Rovers past or Rovers present, you get a great sense of community – a club largely run by volunteers, who have kept their flag proudly flying through many challenging times.  Dixie appreciated this quality of community spirit and endeavour in his time with the club, he conveyed very fond memories of Sligo in his autobiography.  He maintained a close link with Rovers when he went back to England, and was even a guest of the Club at the 1970 FAI Cup Final.’

Chair of Sligo Rovers Heritage Group Aidan Mannion outlined the role of the Group is to keep the history of the club alive for this and future generations.

‘We welcome Paul’s book as an excellent account of the career of an iconic player.  The reports from that time show the massive impact Dixie’s signing had on the club, the town and indeed the league, and the interest in Paul’s book shows the fascination extends to the current day.’
