The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Councillor Dara Mulvey and Acting Chief Executive Tom Kilfeather have conveyed their sympathies to the family of former Sligo County Manager Paul Byrne, who passed away at the weekend.

Paul was born in June 1932 in County Longford. He devoted his life to public service, joining Sligo County Council as a Clerical Officer in November 1949, and would go on to serve as Town Clerk in Kells, Staff Officer, County Accountant and County Secretary in Donegal County Council, Programme Manager with the North Western Health Board and County Manager in Roscommon County Council before being appointed to Sligo County Council as Manager in September 1977. He served in the post for over 15 years before retiring in January 1993.
Paul is remembered as a thorough gentleman and as an excellent administrator. He was always supportive and encouraging to staff and took great pride in working with Elected Members to see Sligo grow and develop under his stewardship.
