Sligo County Council welcomes the Government’s “Be Summer Ready 2021 Campaign” which provides information on being prepared and staying safe during the summer months.

While the summer is a great opportunity for outdoor activities, unfortunately, this comes with a higher level of risk of serious injuries and fatalities from causes such as farm accidents, increased road incidents and accidental drownings. Wildfires also increase in the summer and they pose serious risks to life and property.
During the summer, Sligo’s beaches and waterways become very popular for both local people and visitors. This year is expected to be very busy with people enjoying ‘staycations’ at Sligo’s numerous attractive destinations.
It is more important than ever that we ensure that we are more vigilant with regard to our personal safety when visiting the coast, lakes, rivers and our countryside, so that we can all safely enjoy our natural amenities while avoiding additional, unnecessary pressure on our emergency and front-line services.
Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Councillor Dara Mulvey endorsed the campaign and stated that water safety is an issue for every person.
“Sligo has some of the most wonderful waterways and beaches in the country. We expect that this summer will see increased visitors as people holiday at home. Unfortunately, they can also be the scenes of tragic accidents. Everyone should know how to stay safe in the water and it is important that we also teach this to our children.”
Sligo County Council confirmed that Beach Lifeguards will be in place from June 5th, each weekend during June, on Enniscrone and Rosses Point beaches. From the start of July, lifeguards will be full time during the week at Rosses Point and Enniscrone, and at weekends at Dunmoran and Streedagh beaches. Beach Wardens will be in place from July and it is planned to have additional resources available this year for peak demand to deal with traffic and littering issues at all beaches.
Sligo County Council’s Water Safety Officer, Pete Murtagh urged the public to inform themselves of the ‘Be Summer Ready’ campaign which provides practical advice on summer preparations. Mr. Murtagh warned of the dangers of inflatable toys such as Li-Los which are highly dangerous for use on rivers, lakes and the sea. He emphasised the importance of being familiar with local beaches such as Strandhill where swimming is prohibited, but highlighted the beaches listed above where responsible swimming can be enjoyed by all.
