About Sligo Local Community Safety Partnership
Sligo County Council, in partnership with the Department of Justice, has established a new Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP) in Sligo.
What Is the LCSP?
The LCSP is a government initiative aimed at improving safety and wellbeing in communities across Ireland. It brings together:
- Elected Members
- Public sector reps (Local Authority, Gardaí, HSE, Tusla)
- Education,
- Business,
- Residents Associations,
- Community reps (including youth, new and minority communities, social inclusion/C&V sector)
- Other areas of expertise
Together, they will identify and address community safety concerns at a local level.
What Does Community Safety Mean?
Community safety is more than just policing. It’s about creating environments where people feel safe and supported. This includes:
- Visible Garda presence
- Safe spaces for children and young people
- Support services for vulnerable groups
- Collaborative responses to local issues
A multi-agency approach ensures that services work together to meet the unique needs of each community.
How Will It Work in Sligo?
The LCSP will replace the existing Joint Policing Committees and serve as a central forum for discussing and deciding on community safety priorities.
Key features include:
- Up to 30 members, including elected councillors, representatives from public services, resident associations, community groups, the business and education sector and other areas of expertise
- Public consultation to identify local priorities
- Development of a Local Community Safety Plan
- Members will attend at least six meetings per year
- Participation in working groups to implement strategies
Sligo LCSP Meetings
Sligo LCSP meetings are held at least once per quarter but can meet as often as considered necessary to conduct its work effectively. In addition, the Safety Partnership is required to hold at least one closed meeting per year for elected representatives (Councillors and Oireachtas members), and a second open public meeting.
Sligo Local Community Safety Plan
The Sligo LCSP will develop a Community Safety Plan which meets the needs of the local community. It will set out the actions to be taken to improve community safety and allow communities to hold local services accountable for implementation of the plan. This process will get underway in Qtr 2 2026 once the National Safety Strategy is in place.
