This year’s theme is about empowering people in the community to look after themselves and others.
This Fire Safety Week, “Know your Room, Know the Risk, Know the Person” highlights the importance of understanding the fire hazards that may exist in the spaces we use every day.
Whether it’s cooking in the kitchen, heaters and open fires in the living room, or smoking and charging electrical items in the bedroom – knowing the risks can make a real difference. Awareness saves lives, and fire safety starts with knowing the risks in each room.
The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management is also encouraging everyone to take part in this year’s campaign by looking beyond their own home and checking in on older or more vulnerable members of their community. Older people living alone remain at greater risk from serious house fires, making it especially important to identify potential fire hazards in the rooms they use every day. Taking a few minutes to help someone assess the risks in their home could make a lifesaving difference.
