Motor Tax Online Service
Motor Tax can be renewed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on the internet.
To complete your motor tax renewal online you will need:
- Credit Card or Laser Card/Debit Card
- Your Motor Insurance details
- Your PIN number (see note below)
For all vehicle renewals, the PIN is now the last six digits of the Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC) Number which appears at the top right hand corner of the front of the VRC and begins with the letter C. That PIN will remain for the vehicle unless its ownership is changed or application for a replacement VRC is made, in which case a new VRC is processed, and a new PIN created.
For Brand New/Imported Vehicle Taxing:
The last six digits of the chassis number (VIN No) remains the PIN for brand new/imported vehicles being taxed online for the first time.
Renewing your motor tax online is straightforward. The process is broken down into a series of easy to understand steps. After you logon to www.motortax.ie using the PIN printed on the top right hand corner of the Vehicle Registration Certificate, you will be asked to:
- Confirm details of your vehicle - they will be displayed on the screen for you
- Confirm your name and address - again, these will be shown on screen but they can be changed if necessary
- Enter your vehicle insurance details
- Select the period of taxation
- Enter your card details for payment
Your motor tax disc will be posted to you within five working days. You can track the issue of your disc by clicking on the "Track Disc Issue" link on the homepage.
Please note: if you are not receiving your tax reminder in the post, see below.
If a vehicle has ever been taxed online by the current owner of the vehicle, paper reminders are no longer being sent to the owners by post. In these situations, the reminders are being sent by email to the email address which was provided when taxing online in the past.
If you do not wish to receive the email reminder in future, there is an ‘unsubscribe’ link at the bottom of the email which will revert the reminders to paper format.
Otherwise, once you have a Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC), your PIN number is the number on the front of the VRC beginning with ‘C’.
If you have a newly imported/brand new vehicle which has never been taxed in Ireland yet, then you can use the last 6 digits of your Chassis number (also known as your VIN number).
