Minutes of The Annual General Meeting of The Municipal District of Sligo-Drumcliff held on Monday 19th June 2023 At 11.30am. in The Council Chamber, County Hall, Riverside, Sligo & Via Ms Teams


COUNCILLORS PRESENT:

CATHAOIRLEACH:

The Cathaoirleach, Councillor Tox Fox, welcomed everyone to the AGM.

 

Councillor T. Fox thanked the Chief Executive, the Executive and staff of Sligo County Council for their assistance during the year.

Councillor T. Fox stated that it had been an honour to act as Cathaoirleach for the past year and he highlighted a number of key projects as follows:

  • Primary Care Centres in Drumcliff and Grange
  • N16 Lugatober Road Development
  • Rosses Point Waste Treatment Plant
  • Calry Hall
  • Yeats Trail
  • Sazerac – Lough Gill Distillery
  • Integration of Ukrainian people into local communities

Councillor T. Walsh thanked the outgoing Cathaoirleach for his fair and punctual chairing of the Municipal District Meetings in what he considered a difficult area geographically.  Councillor T. Walsh wished Councillor T. Fox well as incoming Leas Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council.

Councillor D. Gilroy apologised for remarks made at last year’s AGM and congratulated Cllr T. Fox on his year as Cathaoirleach.  The importance of ensuring that this Municipal District gets more recognition was highlighted.

Councillor T. Fox accepted Councillor D. Gilroy’s apology.

Councillor M. Casserly thanked Councillor T. Fox for his work during the year.

Mr. J. Molloy, on behalf of the Executive, thanked Councillor T. Fox for his year as Cathaoirleach and stated that it had been positive to have held an MD Meeting within the community in Calry N.S.

Councillor T. Fox wished the incoming Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach well for the coming year.

 

1.  ELECTION OF CATHAOIRLEACH:

It was then:

Proposed by Councillor T. Fox
Seconded by Councillor D. Gilroy

AND AGREED:

“To elect Councillor Thomas Walsh as Cathaoirleach of the Sligo-Drumcliff Municipal District”.

As there were no other nominations, Councillor Thomas Walsh was elected Cathaoirleach of the Sligo – Municipal District.

Councillor T. Walsh then assumed the Chair and expressed his honour at being elected to the position of Cathaoirleach for the forthcoming year.

Councillor T. Walsh thanked his proposer and seconder and the outgoing Cathaoirleach and stated that it was a privilege to be elected for a second term as Chairperson of the Sligo – Drumciff MD area.  Councillor T. Walsh acknowledged the support of his family, John Gethins and John Watters.

Councillor T. Walsh listed some projects of significance including the launch of the Surf Centre in Strandhill, the development of Queen Maeve Plaza, Cleveragh Performance Space and the Eastern Garavogue Bridge.  Other positive developments included the recruitment of a Festivals and Events Co-ordinator, Tourism Officer and the Masterplan for Sligo Harbour.

Cathaoirleach, Councillor T. Walsh referred to a number of issues, including the lack of investment in Sligo University Hospital over recent years, lack of once off housing in the MD area and the need for a new HQ for An Garda Siochana in Sligo.

Councillor T. Walsh stated that the N17 needed to continue to be a priority along with Ballygawley Village Improvements.  He assured Members that he would be a fair and transparent Chair in what he considered to be a difficult and vast electoral area.

Councillor T. Walsh thanked Mr. F. Feighan T.D. for his work at bringing investment into the County.  The staff of Sligo County Council were thanked and Councillor T. Walsh welcomed Ms. Sinead Branley back to work.  Councillor T. Walsh referred to the need for a quicker response time from Council officials.

Councillor Casserly congratulated Councillor T. Walsh and highlighted the need for continuing to focus on safety on the N15 and the upgrading of footpaths in the Grange, Cliffoney and Drumcliff areas, along with the need for investment in these villages.

Councillor T. Fox and Councillor D. Gilroy congratulated Councillor T. Walsh. 

Mr. J. Molloy congratulated Councillor T. Walsh.

 

2. ELECTION OF LEAS-CHATHAOIRLEACH:

Proposed by Councillor T. Walsh
Seconded by Councillor D. Gilroy

AND AGREED:

“That Councillor Marie Cassserly be elected as Leas-Cathaoirleach of the Sligo-Drumcliff Municipal District”.

Members congratulated Councillor Casserly on being elected Leas- Cathaoirleach of the Sligo – Drumcliff MD area.

Locations for MD meetings to be decided.
