Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of the Borough District of Sligo Held on Monday 1st July 2024 at 10.00 A.M. in the Council Chamber, City Hall, Quay Street, Sligo.

Mayor, Councillor Declan Bree presided.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE MEETING:

The Mayor, Councillor Declan Bree:

Congratulated & welcomed newly elected Councillor’s, Councillor Cosgrove and Councillor Nealon on their election and Councillor Gibbons, Councillor O’Boyle & Councillor MacSharry on their re-election. The Mayor in his address, paid tribute to former colleagues Councillor O’Grady & Councillor Maguire for the significant roles they carried out in both the Borough and County, during their terms, and wished them well in their retirements.

The Mayor thanked all the staff of the Council, from the Chief Executive, all the Director of Services, particularly Director of Services, (DOS) Dorothy Clarke, the Management Team, the engineering staff, particularly Thomas Kerins, Brian Flynn, and to all the other staff for their assistance and co-operation during his term as Mayor.

The Mayor thanked the Meeting Administrator Jude Mannion for his professionalism and assistance during his years as Meeting Administrator; and welcomed the new Meeting Administrator Orla Murrin.  A very special word of thanks was given to staff members Dorothy Gillan & David McLoughlin, The Mayor went on to thank the media and journalists in the Sligo Champion, Sligo Weekender and Ocean FM. In summation, the Mayor thanked his wife & family for their support during his term in office, and the people of Sligo for their support.

Councillor O’Boyle:
Also thanked the staff of Sligo County Council, and congratulated Councillor Nealon & Councillor Cosgrove on their election to Sligo County Council. Councillor O’Boyle in his comments said that Mayor Bree had been in a lot of campaigns, such as cost of living, solidarity with Palestinians and complimented his open-door policy during his term as Mayor. Wishing the Mayor success in his new role as Cathaoirleach.

Councillor Gibbons:
Congratulated Mayor Bree on the fantastic work he carried out during his term. In his comments he sighted the excellent way in which all parties on the council work together for the common goal of serving the people of Sligo. Councillor Gibbons also thanked Jude Mannion, Thomas Kerins & Dorothy Clarke, for their assistance and advice, and welcomed Orla Murrin.

Councillor MacSharry:
In his comments acknowledged the hard-working staff in the Municipal District & Local Authority. Councillor MacSharry also congratulated Mayor Bree on his work, stating that he has always been honourable, fair, and inclusive during his term as Mayor. Congratulating Mayor Bree on his marriage which took place in City Hall. Councillor MacSharry acknowledged the wealth of experience that Mayor Bree brought to the delivery of the programme of work carried out. Congratulating Mayor Bree on his election to Cathaoirleach.

The DoS Dorothy Clarke congratulated all members on their election and in particular welcomed new members, Councillor Cosgrove and Councillor Nealon. The DoS acknowledged the huge workload undertaken by Councillor Bree during his term as Mayor and wished Councillor Bree every success in his new role as Cathaoirleach for this year.

“That Councillor Tom MacSharry be elected as Mayor for the Brough District of Sligo”

Proposed by Councillor F. Nealon

That Councillor Nessa Cosgrove be elected as Mayor of the Borough District of Sligo”.

Mayor Bree asked for a seconder for this proposal. As there was no Seconder, Mayor Bree deemed Councillor Mac Sharry elected Mayor.

AND AGREED

That Councillor Tom MacSharry be elected as Mayor of the Borough District of Sligo”.

 

2.  ELECTION OF DEPUTY MAYOR:

Proposed by Councillor A. Gibbons  
Seconded by Councillor D. Bree.

That Councillor Gino O’Boyle be elected as Deputy Mayor of the Borough District of Sligo”.

Proposed by Councillor N. Cosgrove 
Seconded by Councillor F. Nealon

“That Councillor Fergal Nealon be elected as Deputy Mayor of the Borough District of Sligo “.

Following a vote on the matter Councillor O’Boyle was elected as Deputy Mayor.

AND AGREED

“That Councillor O’Boyle be elected as Deputy Mayor”.

 

3. TO NOMINATE 2 MEMBERS OF THE MUNICIPLE DISTRICT TO SIT ON THE COUNTY SLIGO PLACENAMES COMMITTEE

Seconded by Councillor G. O’Boyle

AND AGREED.

That Councillor Bree and O’Boyle be elected to Sligo Placenames Committee”.

 

4.  TO NOMINATE 2 MEMBERS OF THE MUNICIPLE DISTRICT TO SIT ON THE COMMITTEE AND VOLUNTARY/ FESTIVALS AND EVENTS GRANTS ASSESSSMENT COMMITTEE

5. TO NOMINATE 2 MEMBERS OF THE MUNICIPLE DISTRICT TO SIT ON THE ARTS ASSESSMENT PANEL

7. TO NOMINATE 1 MEMBERS OF THE MUNICIPLE DISTRICT TO SIT ON THE SLIGO COUNTY COUNCIL PEACE PLUS PARTNERSHIP COMMITTEE.
