Minutes of the Annual Meeting of Sligo County Council Held on 27 June 2005 at 3.00pm in the Council Chamber, County Hall, Riverside, Sligo.

CATHAOIRLEACH: 

The Cathaoirleach, Councillor M. Gormley presided.

Councillor M. Gormley thanked the members, officials and staff for their support and encouragement during her term as Cathaoirleach.  She thanked the meetings administrator, communications staff, press and catering staff.  She also congratulated Councillor R O’ Grady on her election as Mayor of Sligo Borough Council.

She stated that at the beginning of her term her aim was to start each meeting on time and to carry out the business of the meeting in an efficient manner and that she was delighted that each meeting agenda had been finished.  There were a number of highlights during the year including the opening of the Tubbercurry recycling centre and the many receptions which had been held in the chamber, opening up the chamber to the community.

The members complimented Councillor M. Gormley on the way she performed her duties during his term of office.

Mr H. Kearns, County Manager on behalf of the management and staff of the Council complimented the outgoing Cathaoirleach, Councillor M. Gormley on her work during her term of office and wished her well.

ELECTION OF CATHAOIRLEACH: 

Proposed by Councillor S. Kilgannon
Seconded by Councillor V. Cawley

“That Councillor P. Barry be our nomination for the position of Cathaoirleach”.


Proposed by Councillor T. Mc Loughlin
Seconded by Councillor G. Murray


“That Councillor M. Fleming be appointed Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council”.


As agreement could not be reached in relation to the matter the Cathaoirleach, Councillor M. Gormley asked that a poll be taken and that the members indicate their preference for either Councillor P. Barry or Councillor M. Fleming.

For Councillor Barry:  Baker, Barry, Bree, Cawley, Colleary, Devins, Gormley, Healy McGowan, Kilgannon, Lundy, McGarry, Queenan, Sherlock.

For Councillor Fleming:  Barrett, Conmy, Fleming, Fox, Henry, MacManus, McGrath, McLoughlin, Mullaney, Murray.

As the result was 13 for Councillor Barry and 10 for Councillor Fleming, Councillor M. Gormley declared Councillor P. Barry elected Cathaoirleach.

Councillor P. Barry took the Chair.  He thanked the members for their support and stated that he was looking forward to the year ahead.  He invited nominations for the position of Leas Cathaoirleach.

ELECTION OF LEAS CATHAOIRLEACH: 

Proposed by Councillor J. Mc Garry
Seconded by Councillor J. Devins

“That Councillor V. Cawley be elected as Vice Chairperson for the term 2005-2006”.


Proposed by Councillor I. Henry
Seconded by Councillor T. Mc Loughlin

“That Councillor I. Fox be selected as Vice Chairperson of Sligo County Council”.


As agreement could not be reached in relation to the matter the Cathaoirleach, Councillor P. Barry asked that a poll be taken and that the members indicate their preference for either Councillor Cawley or Councillor Fox.

For Councillor Cawley:  Baker, Barry, Bree, Cawley, Colleary, Devins, Gormley, Healy McGowan, Kilgannon, Lundy, McGarry, Queenan, Sherlock.

For Councillor Fox:  Barrett, Conmy, Fleming, Fox, Henry, McGrath, McLoughlin, Mullaney, Murray.

Abstainee:  MacManus

As the result was 13 for Councillor Cawley, 9 for Councillor Fox and 1 abstainee, the Cathaoirleach declared Councillor V. Cawley elected Leas Cathaoirleach.

The members congratulated Councillor V. Cawley on her position as Leas Cathaoirleach.
