Requests that Sligo County Council develop a pilot SunSmart initiative across the County, to include a selected number of high-use outdoor amenities such as parks, playgrounds, walking trails and beaches, incorporating: SunSmart awareness signage aligned with HSE guidance, Automated UV Index readers, Free sunscreen dispensers.

The pilot programme should be monitored and evaluated, with a report brought back to Council on usage, costs and outcomes, with a view to expanding the initiative to additional locations across the county where appropriate.  The Council is also requested to explore funding and partnership opportunities with the HSE, Healthy Ireland and other relevant stakeholders to support delivery of this initiative.”

The delays in the staffing process this year are causing unnecessary anxiety for parents, staff and Boards of Management all of whom need certainty in order to plan for their children’s education.

The staffing schedule was published much later than usual, on 26th March 2026, and the Appeals Board will not be sitting until May 2026. This significantly reduces the time available for both schools and families to prepare adequately for the upcoming academic year”.

This motion calls on the Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O Brien to introduce an income-based interest free loan or a ‘fair deal’ type scheme for homeowners who cannot afford the upfront payment required to avail of the SEAI grants.’

“Dismayed that the funding allocated by Government to Sligo County Council for the provision of Housing Adaptation Grants for People with a Disability, Mobility Aid Grants and Housing Aid for Older People grants, is totally inadequate, and further recognising that the shortfall in funding can have dire consequences for vulnerable people who require grant assistance, this Council calls on the Taoiseach, the Minister for Housing and Ministers of State Marian Harkin and Frank Feighan, to take the necessary action to ensure that adequate funding is allocated as a matter of urgency so as the Council can provide necessary grant aid to ensure that vulnerable individuals, and families in Sligo receive the support they desperately need to live with dignity in their own homes.”

“To ask the Chief Executive what provision Sligo County Council has made, and plans to make, for age-friendly and disability-accessible social housing, including single-storey dwellings, across the county;

  • to outline the application of universal design principles within these social housing developments;
  • to detail the number and locations of such social housing units delivered and planned to date, including any specific provision within the County Development Plan;

4.27 To consider the following motion as submitted by Councillor E. Mc Sharry

“Sligo County Council calls on the Minister for Education to review the policy for allocating additional teaching posts to primary schools experiencing significant enrolment growth. Current timing of staffing allocations and appeals often creates uncertainty for schools and parents, particularly for Junior Infants. A precedent was recently set nationally where a school in Dunshaughlin received an additional teaching post before the standard allocation and appeals process, showing that flexibility is possible when there is clear evidence of need.  The Council urges the Minister to introduce a policy allowing early allocation of additional teachers where justified, ensuring consistency across all counties and timely support for schools experiencing rapid growth”.

4.28 To consider the following motion as submitted by Councillor D. Bree

“Recognising Ireland's long-standing policy of military neutrality, our strong tradition of peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance abroad, and our strong international reputation in diplomacy; Acknowledging that the Triple Lock mechanism was introduced to safeguard our military neutrality during the adoption of the Nice and Lisbon Treaties; Welcoming the decision of many local authorities (including Dublin City Council, Galway City Council, the Councils of Clare, Donegal, Cavan, Mayo, Wexford, Louth etc), who have all declared their opposition to the governments proposal to abolish the triple lock; this Council calls on the Government to hold a national plebiscite, to take place before any legislation to amend the Triple Lock mechanism is brought before the Dáil, to allow the Irish people to express their view on whether a United Nations mandate should remain a requirement for Ireland to deploy peacekeeping troops overseas.”

4.29 To consider the following motion as submitted by Councillor D. Bree

“Cognisant of the current housing crisis and recognising that access to secure and genuinely affordable housing is increasingly out of reach for many people, this Council again expresses its disappointment that no date has been set to hold a referendum to enshrine the right to housing in the Constitution, and further the Council calls on the government to hold a referendum on the issue without further delay.”

“That this Council, noting the significant increase in vape shop premises across County Sligo and the serious health risks posed by nicotine inhaling products to children and young people — as recognised by the HSE, which states that youth vaping offers no benefit and is linked to brain development harm, nicotine addiction, mood disorders, and increased likelihood of smoking initiation — calls on the Planning and Economic Development Section to:

(a) Examine the scope within the County Development Plan and local area plans to introduce specific planning controls on the concentration, location and signage of vape retail outlets, particularly in proximity to schools, playgrounds, and youth facilities;

(b) Investigate the feasibility of applying differential commercial rates or a supplementary rates levy to vape and e-cigarette retail premises as a means of discouraging their further proliferation in the county;

  • No maintenance in over 2 years, with none planned
  • Works were due to start end of Feb, funding pulled last minute”.

4.35 To consider the following motion as submitted by Councillor D. Gilroy

“That Sligo County Council consider assigning the follow up on road opening licences to the General Services Supervisor GSS in each area who would be in the best position to see any infringement or failure to repair roads as required. We further ask how many “pursuit trained Gardai” we have nationally and in the Sligo Leitrim Division and how many are even CBD 2 or CBD 3 Driver Trained and are resources in place to train Gardai in Pursuit Training. We also request details of how many CBD 4 (High Powered vehicle Drivers) are in this division and how many vehicle resources of this standard are available to them”.
