Agricultural Inspections in the Buncrowey River Catchment Area

Sligo County Council wishes to inform the public, particularly landowners and farmers within the Buncrowey River Catchment Area, of upcoming agricultural inspections.

These inspections are an integral part of the National Agricultural Inspections Programme.

Reason for Selection of Buncrowey River Catchment:

The Buncrowey River catchment has been selected for inspection under the Water Action Plan 2024 due to ongoing moderate water quality levels. These inspections aim to improve water quality, which has remained unchanged for several years. Agriculture has been identified as a significant contributing factor, and addressing these pressures is key to improving the water quality in the catchment.

Purpose of Inspections:

The primary objective of these inspections is to assess compliance with the European Union (Good Agricultural Practice for Protection of Waters) Regulations 2022 within the Buncrowey River catchment.

This initiative aims to:

  • Identify areas where agricultural activities may be contributing to water quality issues.
  • Work collaboratively with farmers to implement best practices that protect and improve water quality.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations.
  • Gather data to inform future water management strategies for the catchment.

What to Expect:

Authorised personnel from Sligo County Council, acting under the National Agricultural Inspections Programme, will be conducting farm visits throughout the Buncrowey River catchment area in the coming weeks and months. We will endeavour to provide reasonable notice where possible.

Sligo County Council appreciates the cooperation of all landowners and farmers in this vital effort to protect and improve the water quality of the Buncrowey River and its surrounding environment.
