The Contract was signed on Monday morning, 9th March 2020, between Sligo County Council and Technical Advisors, Barry Transportation, for the delivery of the next stage of the N16 Lugatober Project, which includes Detailed Design and preparation of Construction Contract Documents.

Positive Advancement for the N16 Lugatober Scheme
This follows An Bord Pleanála’s decision to grant Planning for the Scheme in August 2019, and confirmation of the Compulsory Purchase Order, by Sligo County Council that same month.
The Lugatober Scheme was brought through the Statutory Planning stage by Sligo County Council’s National Roads Project Office Team and involved the preparation of an Environment Impact Assessment Report and a Natura Impact Statement for the route. This followed a route selection process for the full N16 in County Sligo, completed in 2017, and the subsequent design, appraisal and environmental evaluation of the Lugatober Section, between Drumkilsellagh and Lugnagall townlands.
When constructed, the N16 Lugatober Scheme will remove one of the poorest geometric sections of Sligo’s national road network. It involves the green-field realignment of just over 2.5km of National Primary Road, from the Drum Road (L3406-0) north to just past the Glencar Road (L3404-0) junction. It will reduce journey times and improve safety along the route, along with improving accessibility for vulnerable road users through the provision of dedicated cycle tracks.
The Contract Documents were signed by Sligo County Council Chief Executive, Ciarán Hayes and Director of Barry Transportation, Eamon Daly, in the presence of Leas Cathaoirleach Cllr. Gino O’Boyle. Present at the signing were members of the Project Team, and amongst the Councillors present was Cllr. Tom Fox, whose mother Ita was a long time campaigner for improvements to the N16 during her time as a Councillor on Sligo County Council.
The Detailed Design and Construction Contract Document preparation will continue through 2020, and Sligo County Council expect to be in a position to award the construction contract in 2021, subject to Transport Infrastructure Ireland approval.
