Under the Government’s July Jobs Stimulus Package, the National Monuments Service of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has announced capital funding for our archaeological heritage through a new Community Monuments Fund. Total funding available nationally for projects under the new Fund in 2020 will be €900,000.

The Community Monuments Fund will invest essential capital in our valuable archaeological heritage and will help owners and custodians of archaeological monuments to safeguard them into the future for the benefit of communities and the public.
The core aims of this Fund are the conservation, maintenance, protection and promotion of local monuments and historic sites. It will:
- enable conservation works to be carried out on monuments which are deemed to be significant and in need of urgent support;
- encourage access to monuments and improve their presentation;
- build resilience in our monuments to enable them to withstand the effects of climate change;
The Community Monuments Fund provides capital funding for projects in relation to archaeological monuments that are included in the Record of Monuments and Places and the Sites and Monuments Record. The Fund is open to local authorities and private applicants or community groups who are the owners or custodians of monuments.
The Community Monuments Fund will offer funding across 3 Streams:
Stream 1 - will offer grants up to €100,000 for essential repairs and capital works for the conservation of archaeological monuments.
Stream 2 - will offer grants of up to €30,000 for development of Conservation Management Plans/Reports aimed at identifying measures for conservation of monuments and improved public access.
Stream 3 - will offer grants of up to €30,000 for the enhancement of access infrastructure and interpretation at archaeological monuments (including COVID protection measures).
How to apply to the Community Monuments Fund 2020
Private applicants or community groups who are the owners or custodians of monuments should:
- complete Application Form CMF-A below (relevant sections only)
- attach a comprehensive Method Statement (see Section 9 of the Explanatory Memo).
- submit to Sligo County Council before 5pm, 17 September 2020.
Please note that parts of Form CMF - A must be completed by the Local Authority before submission to the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. Community groups or private owners should complete only the relevant sections of Form CMF- A.
Completed applications should be submitted to heritage@sligococo.ie by 5pm, 17th September 2020. Please note that applications will be accepted by email only and that the size of email must not exceed 15MB.
