The late Councillor Margaret Gormley

Sligo County Council elected members and staff are mourning the passing of one of the Council’s longest serving members, Councillor Margaret Gormley, who passed away Friday morning. The Gormley family connection with Sligo County Council goes back to 1942, when her late father Willie was first elected to the Council. Margaret was co-opted onto the Council in 1980 and successfully contested every subsequent local election. Margaret was elected Cathaoirleach in 2004.

On Wednesday May 1st, the Sligo County Diaspora Strategy 2019 - 2024 was launched in City Hall. The launch comes after a comprehensive strategy was compiled in collaboration with Leitrim, Longford and Roscommon County Councils. The process began in 2017 when the local authorities in the region identified a need to develop a strategy in line with the National Government Strategy - Global Irish.

Social Enterprise Development Fund has re-opened for a second year.

The Social Enterprise Development Fund is a €1.6 million fund which will be delivered over two years; 2018 – 2020. The fund was created by Social Innovation Fund Ireland (SIFI) in partnership with Local Authorities Ireland and is funded by IPB Insurance and the Department of Rural and Community Development. The Department of Rural and Community Development provides match funding for all funds raised by Social Innovation Fund Ireland, through the Dormant Accounts Fund

Chairperson of County Sligo Local Community Development Committee (LCDC), Councillor Chris MacManus has welcomed an allocation of nearly a quarter million euros to the LCDC to promote ‘Healthy Ireland’ initiatives throughout the County. ‘The funding will help support innovative projects in areas such as community mental health, physical activity and nutrition as part of the Healthy Ireland Fund 2019-2021 Programme.’
