Minutes of Special Meeting of Sligo County Council held on Wednesday 20th August, 2014 at 11 am in The Council Chamber, City Hall, Quay Street, Sligo

At the outset the Cathaoirleach, Councillor J. Queenan read out the Item on the agenda for this Special Meeting.

To consider the following motion as submitted by Councillors T. Healy, M. Baker, M. Gormley, S. MacManus, S. O’Boyle & D. Bree.

“To discuss the issue of hydraulic fracturing (fracking), its effects on this region and the related concerns of the people of Co. Sligo.”

It was then;

Proposed by Councillor T. Healy
Seconded by Councillor S. Mac Manus

AND AGREED

“To suspend Standing Orders in order to allow Mr. Eddie Mitchell a member of ‘Love Leitrim’ and Mr. Nigel McGrath from ‘Belcoo Frack Free’ to address this meeting.”

Eddie Mitchell proceeded to deliver a presentation on behalf of ‘Love Leitrim’ and Nigel McGrath gave a presentation on the effects of the introduction of ‘fracking’ on his community in Belcoo, Co. Fermanagh.

The Cathaoirleach thanked Mr. Mitchell and Mr. McGrath for their presentations and invited comments and questions from the members.

In response to queries from the members Mr. Mitchell informed the meeting there was an indication that an EIA report would be carried out, as currently all concerns related to ‘fracking’ are currently referred to the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.

Councillor Keaney informed the members that he had just received notes on a meeting with Minister Joe McHugh, Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs and the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources with Special Responsibility for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources.

It was agreed to circulate these notes to the members after the meeting.

Following further discussion it was;

Proposed by Councillor T. Healy
Seconded by Councillor S. Mac Manus

AND AGREED

“That Sligo County Council asks the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White and the Irish Government not to facilitate Tamboran Resources in its application for an exploratory licence by not allowing it to use the results of drilling outside the state to support it application in this state.”

The meeting ended at 12.30pm
