Planning Consent and Compulsory Purchase Order approved for N16 Road Improvement

One of the poorest geometric sections of Sligo’s national road network has in recent weeks, received statutory planning consent from An Bord Pleanála.

This is the result of a route selection process (for the full N16) completed in 2017 and the subsequent (2018-2019) design, appraisal and environmental evaluation of a section between Drumkilsellagh and Lugnagall townlands. The application made in February of this year (by the TII Project Office of Sligo County Council) consisted of an Environment Impact Assessment Report and a Natura Impact Statement.

The project, which spans from the Drum Road (L3406-0) to north of the Glencar Road (L3404-0) will, via green-field realignment, reduce journey times and improve safety along the route. It will also improve accessibility for vulnerable road users through the provision of dedicated cycle tracks. Concurrent to the planning consent, Sligo County Council has also simultaneously confirmed a Compulsory Purchase Order for 23.85 ha of land.

The next stage of the project is to complete the Detailed Design and prepare Contract Documents for Construction. Subject to TII (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) approval, this will advance in the coming months.
