Sligo County Council is delighted to be supporting eight of their employees to volunteer as part of the Time to Read programme with St John’s National School.
Time to Read for second class students from St Johns National School
The Time to Read programme, run by Business in the Community Ireland, partners local organisations with children in second class to assist them to increase their enjoyment of books and improve fluency and comprehension when reading.
Employees from Sligo County Council will spend 18 weeks reading with children from the second class on a weekly basis. The children and their volunteers also combine the reading with a workplace visit to the Council and to Sligo Library. Training and support for the volunteers was provided by Business in the Community Ireland.
Welcoming the start of the programme, Bernard Mulhern, School Principal, said ‘We are delighted to get involved in this wonderful programme. One of the greatest gifts adults can give to children is to read to them. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. Our 2nd class pupils are so excited and can’t wait to get started “
The Time to Read programme, has this year partnered 48 primary schools with local businesses across Ireland to give valuable reading support to 2nd class primary school children, with participant teachers reporting a significant impact on the children’s comprehension and fluency when reading. The community based programme is part of BITC Ireland’s ongoing work to help businesses have a more positive impact on the communities in which they do business.
"You can never under estimate the value and power of reading in a child’s life and this project gives children time out to read with their volunteer readers"
