129 Community groups across a wide spectrum of focus and activities have recently been awarded grant aid totalling €263,402 under a new scheme funded by the Department of Rural & Community Development and administered by Sligo County Councils LCDC (Local Community Development Committee).
Communities Enhancement Programme’ sees over 120 Community groups share LCDC allocation of €250,000 in grant aid
The programme has resulted in small scale capital grants been approved in respect of repairs and renovations to Community Centres and Parish Halls, Community run childcare facilities & Playgrounds, together with opportunities for works to sports facilities along with equipment purchase for locally based Sports clubs with an emphasis on supporting youth.
The scheme also supports the ongoing work by Tidy Town Committees across the County as well as specific initiatives such as a number of ‘first responder’ defibrillator local action groups and the further development of Mens Shed network.
The scheme was specifically targeted towards small scale projects and for groups with limited other avenues for funding. It has allowed for assisting small grassroots community projects to get off the ground and for often essential works to the community fabric that otherwise might not proceed
