National Day of Commemoration Ceremony

The Cathaoirleach Councillor Tom MacSharry has commended the people associated with the hosting of the National Day of Commemoration Service at Sligo City Hall.

The Cathaoirleach said

‘This is a significant ceremony for Sligo County Council and the people of Sligo, as it allows is to offer a very public and sincere appreciation for all members of our Defence Forces across the different services.  The ceremony  is hosted each year in honour of Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in past wars or on service with the united Nations, and it was heartening to see so many families of our Defence Forces attend to witness this tribute.’

The Cathaoirleach also thanked the senior Defence personnel in attendance. Parade Commander Neill Ledwith and Lt. Brendan McGovern, and the members of the clergy who officiated at the Act of Commemoration, Reverend Alan Mitchell, Fr Pat Lombard, Dean Arfon Williams and the Rev. David Clarke.

The Cathaoirleach also commend the various musicians ‘for enhancing the ceremony with their outstanding music’ - Sligo Concert Band, and soloist Olivia O Hanlon accompanied by Donal Gray.
