Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems

Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems (Including Septic Tanks)

County Sligo has approximately 10,000 Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems (DWWTS). A programme of inspections is carried out on an annual basis in accordance with a national plan prepared by the Environmental Protection Agency. The aim of the plan is to protect water quality and public health from risks posed by domestic wastewater treatment systems. Under the current plan; National Inspection Plan 2018-2021; Domestic Wastewater Treatment Systems, Sligo County Council must carry out 28 inspections on an annual basis. Selection of individual sites for inspection is based on a risk based approach in terms of protection of water quality and public health.  The Environmental Protection Agency publish an annual report on the implementation of the National Inspection Plan.
